Iron Man’s comeback to the Marvel Cinematic Universe comes with one condition, as Robert Downey Jr. has already disclosed. Avengers: Endgame, which was released almost ten years after the franchise’s inception, completed the Infinity Saga. To underscore its significance in the MCU’s past, the movie also served as the farewell to the franchise’s first hero. With Iron Man’s self-sacrificing act to protect the universe from Thanos’ danger, Marvel Studios concluded Tony Stark’s personal saga with his passing. Even years after his death, fans are still talking a lot about Stark’s potential comeback to the universe.
At this moment, the Multiverse Saga’s climax is being set up by the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Sadly, things aren’t going as smoothly as they were in the Infinity Saga. Along with the public’s identity issue, interest in the universe is waning. There’s new hope that Stark will be involved in the MCU again, with rumours circulating that Marvel Studios is thinking of making an original film based on the Six Avengers and that plans to recast Downey as Iron Man are in the works. But if the actor declines the offer, then none of the franchise’s goals will be realised.
Fortunately, even though Downey says he believes he has played Iron Man to the best of his ability in Avengers: Endgame, he has never completely slammed the door on the prospect of rejoining the MCU. This is to be expected, given his excellent working relationship with Marvel Studios. Having said that, the performer needs to fulfil one need in order to return as Tony Stark. He stated that he intends to pursue other endeavours in addition to being Iron Man in a 2020 interview with the Joe Rogan Experience. Below is a whole quote from Downey:
“There would have to be a super compelling argument and a series of events that made it obvious. But the other thing is, I wanna do other stuff.”
During his Oppenheimer conference tour, Downey openly shared his fear that his acting career will be ruined by portraying the same role in the MCU for extended periods of time. It’s reasonable to assume that Downey will be more insistent about being allowed to leave the MCU if he ever returns as Iron Man, especially since the Christopher Nolan film may earn him an Oscar. He is scheduled to star in the forthcoming Vertigo remake directed by Alfred Hitchcock and the television series The Sympathiser, following Oppenheimer.
However, there are risks involved in reintroducing Iron Man to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Primarily, it could sabotage an otherwise excellent farewell to the character. Beyond that, though, there are other elements that will make implementing this concept very challenging. First, the actor’s contract will need to be renegotiated by Marvel Studios and the actor. Kevin Feige may be looking at a significantly higher asking salary before he agrees to return, given how costly he was in his last years in the company. Secondly, because Downey is occupied with other projects, scheduling will be more difficult this time.
